Stop At: Loggia dei Lanzi, Piazza della Signoria, 50121, Florence Italy

Situated in the Piazza della Signoria, here is one of the most beautiful medieval structures in Florence. A wonderful arched gallery, it was originally built in the 14th century in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. The swearing in of important public officials took place here, before it became the world’s first open air public sculpture museum. Download AppyGuide app and hear fascinating stories about each of these beautiful sculptures from world-famous art historian and BBC superstar Andrew Graham-Dixon.

Duration: 15 minutes

Duration: 5 minutes

Stop At: Cappella Brancacci, Piazza del Carmine Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine, 50124, Florence Italy

Called by some the “Sistine Chapel” of the early Renaissance, this jewel is one of a kind. Join Andrew Graham-Dixon in the Brancacci Chapel to admire its frescoes as well as enjoy some peace and quiet away from the tourist crowds.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Battistero di San Giovanni, Piazza San Giovanni, 50122, Florence Italy

Dazzling gold of the majestic ceiling of this Baptistery evokes the era of the Byzantine masters in its intricate style, almost transporting you out of Florence entirely, leading some to believe that the artists were mosaicists from Constantinople. Look up and you will see depictions of various scenes from the Bible, including the Last Judgment, the Stories of St. John the Baptist, Joseph, and Genesis. The most memorable and terrifying of all being the representation of Hell. Indeed, who can forget a horned Satan nibbling on a man?

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Sant'Apollonia, Via XXVII Aprile, 1, 50129, Florence Italy

This Last Supper is as wonderful and influential as any of the masterpieces in the Uffizi. It is likely that it was carefully studied by none other than Leonardo da Vinci himself before he started his own Last Supper in Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan. See Andrea del Castagno’s take on that moment when Christ proclaims that “one of you will betray me”. Truly one of Florence’s best-kept secrets!

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Piazza del Duomo 9, 50122, Florence Italy

Inside this museum you will see a marvellous wooden sculpture of Mary Magdalene, a prostitute who became one of Christ’s most loyal followers. This masterpiece by Donatello will send a shiver down your spine… she feels almost alive. All the more impressive when you consider that it is made entirely out of wood!

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Duomo - Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, Via della Canonica, 1 Piazza del Duomo, 50122, Florence Italy

At the beginning of the 15th century, a hundred years after the construction of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (or the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower), the structure was still missing its dome. No one knew how to build a dome of that size until Filippo Brunelleschi, a goldsmith with no formal training in architecture, came in and proposed his idea on how such a structure could be constructed. A fascinating story about one of Florence’s most important symbols.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Church of Santa Maria Novella, Piazza Santa Maria Novella, 50123, Florence Italy

As you explore Florence, please do not overlook the church of Santa Maria Novella. When you are inside, head to the Strozzi Chapel to see the Last Judgement. On the left-hand side you’ll see Paradise, on the right-hand side – Hell or “Inferno”. And it is the “Inferno” fresco that truly is one of the hidden jewels of Florence. This painting is remarkable for the reason that it’s the very first depiction of hell as described by Dante in his Divine Comedy. Even though severely damaged by time, this evocative vision of hell will surely send a shiver down your spine.

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Florence Italy

The two greatest artists of their time faced off in the Salone di Cinquecento, the Room of the Five Hundred, in the Palazzo Vecchio (Florence’s Town Hall). The contest took place in 1505 and pitted the two extraordinary artists against one another in creating battle scenes that celebrated Florence and its people at their best.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Via Camillo Cavour 1-3, 50129, Florence Italy

The frescoes of the Chapel of the Magi, created by Benozzo Gozzoli in 1459 for the Medici family, are a hidden jewel of Florence. In a fairy-tale landscape you see the Three Wise Men processing to present their gifts to Baby Jesus. But if you look closely at the participants of the procession, you’ll realise this isn’t purely a religious procession. Gozzoli updated it – he set it in his present day of 1459. The Medicis are at the head of the procession, looking at us from above as if proudly saying “follow us and you’ll be rich and powerful”.

The sanctuary rises on the homonymous rock in the vicinity of the town of Tropea. It is likely that the rock of the island was inhabited, around the 7th-8th century, by hermits. These, isolating themselves from the civilized world, dedicated themselves to a contemplative and ascetic life. The first written indications of the use of the rock for monastic purposes date back to the XI century, everything that precedes must be considered as a historical hypothesis. For many years it belonged to the Basilian monks and from the eleventh century the Benedictine monks lived there. It was Roberto the Guiscard, the Norman duke, who wanted the passage from the Greek to the Latin rite, around 1060. Following the earthquakes of 1783 and 1905, little remains of the original structure. The staircase to follow to reach it was built around 1810.

Having become one of the symbolic places of Calabria in the world, this church is of medieval origin.
