Discover with us its well-preserved architecture dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods.  Come and see its eight UNSCO World Heritage Sites.

In 402 AD the Western Roman Emperor Honorius, fearing an invasion from the barbarians  was forced to move his court from Rome to Ravenna.  Thus, Ravenna became the capital of the Western Roman Empire until its dissolution in 476 AD.  During this period however the city saw the construction of a number of magnificent monuments that have bestowed upon the city a splendid heritage of historical buildings.   Over the centuries it has become a renowned city of art and culture.

Known as the mosaic centre it is interesting to note that this art form did not originate here. However, it certainly spawned the greatest exponents of this ancient craft, still evident in the many workshops and artisan shops today.  Ravenna is also where Christian iconology originated, a mixture of symbolism and realism with Roman and Byzantine influences.

On the tour you will see the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia that was built to house the remains of the Roman empress as well as the most significant Byzantine church in the west, the Basilica of San Vitale.  You then visit the Church of Sant’ Appolinare Nuovo which bears witness to Ravenna’s domination by the barbarians and then, possibly the oldest monument in Ravenna, the Neonian Baptistey that dates to the early V century.

However, as well as beautiful monuments and mosaics Ravenna is also renowned for being the town where the Florentine poet Dante found refuge during his exile and where he wrote the Inferno.  We take a walk into the Zona Dantesca (Dante Zone), an area dedicated to the great poet and where silence is maintained by Ravenna’s citizens as a mark of respect to his memory. It is here that we will visit Dante’s tomb and the church of San Francesco where in 1321 his funeral was held.

There will also be time to stroll along some of Ravenna’s streets for a little window shopping!

Finally though, there is one last experience.  No-one can come to Ravenna without having a taste of a traditional Piadina.  Our guide knows where to buy the very best ones and will offer you this experience!
