Head out on an independent shore excursion from the La Spezia port to the towns of Florence and Pisa, breathing in the magical atmosphere that only Tuscany can offer. Your private driver will take you first to the historic center of Florence, where you can explore and appreciate its artistic and cultural treasures at your leisure. Then head to Pisa to see the Field of Miracles and be enchanted by its world-famous landmark, the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Prefer to see Florence and Pisa with a guide? Upgrade to include a guide in addition to the driver, and receive a skip-the-line ticket to either the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery or the Museum of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence!

After meeting your driver at the port in La Spezia, sit back and enjoy your drive into the Tuscan countryside toward Florence. Driving up Florence’s beautiful Viale dei Colli, you'll reach the marvelous terrace called Piazzale Michelangelo, named after the artist who sculpted one of the city’s most famous pieces of art – the original David statue. From the terrace, enjoy panoramic views of Florence and the Arno Valley.

Follow an uphill road until you reach Forte Belvedere, built around 1590 to control the Florentine population in case of internal riots. Then visit Pitti Palace, home to many galleries, or stroll through the magnificent Boboli Gardens – with this independent tour, the choice is yours!

Next head off to Piazza della Repubblica and admire its triumphal arch, known as the Arcone. During this time in Florence, you decide what to do next. Perhaps walk through the Piazza del Duomo to see its magnificent Baptistery and Giotto's Bell Tower (any entrance fees at own expense).

Your shore excursion then continues to Pisa, roughly 40 minutes away. Stop by the Field of Miracles and marvel at Pisa's famous landmark, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Although it was designed to be perfectly vertical, it started to lean during construction. Your itinerary in Pisa is also flexible, so perhaps take a walk to Piazza dei Cavalieri, where you can admire the historic Scuola Normale, one of the most famous universities in Italy. After a wonderful day full of sightseeing, your driver will take you back to your ship in the La Spezia port.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:
We will ensure your timely return to the La Spezia port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. See our terms and conditions for full details.

Enjoy a romantic sunset boat tour with this private 2-hour cruise along the Cinque Terre. Watch the sky light up in different colors as you admire the Cinque Terre villages from the water. Sip wine and eat olives and focaccia (additional expense) during the tour.

Make your way to the marina of Riomaggiore to depart on this private evening boat tour.

The boat tour includes an excursion into the Marine Protected Area and the coastline along the five villages of the Cinque Terre. It's some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the world, where sinuous paths traverse seemingly impregnable cliffsides and a 19th-century railway line cuts through a series of coastal tunnels to ferry the footsore from village to village on slow trains. Cars were banned from the town centers over a decade ago. Rooted in antiquity, the Cinque Terre's five villages date from the early medieval period.

Enjoy snacks and aperitifs on-board (additional fee), tasting a typical 'focaccia,' a flat oven-baked Italian bread product similar in style and texture to pizza, plus organic olives and fine Italian wine.

A customizable 9-hour shore excursion for the discerning traveler seeking an authentic Italian experience on a small-group tour with only the very best of English speaking driver guides. Discover Italy up-close in a Mercedes minivan for up to 8 people, comfortably taking you into the very heart of the city. Get the most of your time ashore by explore both the powerful 11th century maritime city of Pisa and the charming medieval walled town of Lucca.

Meet your private driver/guide at 08:00 close to your ship for the pleasant hour's drive to the charming medieval city of Lucca. It is a city enclosed and protected through the centuries by an imposing 16th century wall, one of the best-preserved Renaissance defenses in Europe. The wall has helped keep the city's original features and Roman street plan intact. You may enjoy starting off your day with a bike ride on top of the walls along the beautiful tree-lined promenade where you can peer down into the palazzi and piazzas of the old city, or look up to views of the surrounding hills. Bike rental is an additional (optional) cost paid on the day of your tour at 5-euro per bike, per hour.

Discover the city's Roman features with the Church of San Michele in Foro standing on the site of the original Roman forum. It was here that Giacomo Puccini began his musical career as a choirboy. Strolling along the lively shopping street of Via Fillungo, you will arrive at the church of San Frediano with its 6th century origins. See the tomb of Saint Zita (1278), mentioned by Dante in the Inferno, whose mummified body can be seen through glass. Discover the unique-shaped arena, Piazza Anfiteatro, constructed in the 1st century AD under Emperor Claudius with 54 arches and a cave able to hold as many as ten thousand spectators in 18 rows of seats. The base of the original amphitheater is now some 3 meters below the center, which was reconstructed in the 1800s as the town's marketplace. The Cathedral of San Martino houses the precious holy relic, the Volto Santo, a cedar-wood crucifix said to be a true portrait of Jesus sculpted by Nicodemus, an eyewitness to the crucifixion. Also see the remarkable marble tomb of Ilaria del Caretto and Tintoretto's infamous 'Last Supper.'

The city is filled with artisans and tempting delicatessens offering Tuscan specialties, and Lucca is particularly renowned for its olive oil. Not to be missed are the underground cellars of Enoteca Vanni, offering a tempting selection of wines from all over Italy. Lunch is at your own cost, and your driver can make recommendations and point you in the right direction.

In the early afternoon, take the short 30 minute drive to the 11th century powerful maritime republic of Pisa. Enjoy a driving tour of the city, which will lead you to the heart of one of the most important monuments in Italy, the breathtaking Piazza dei Miracoli with its Baptistry, the Cathedral, Campo Santo cemetery, and of course, the Leaning Tower. You are free to explore some of the city on foot before meeting up with your driver for the return journey back to your ship in the port of La Spezia, with arrival at around 1700.

This is a 9-hour guided shore excursion from the port of La Spezia exploring the Carrara Marble Quarries, the sculpture town of Pietrasanta and a Colli di Luni Vermentino wine tasting for the discerning traveler seeking an authentic Italian experience on a small group tour with only the very best of English speaking driver/guides. Discover Italy close-up in a Mercedes minivan of up to 7 - 8 people, taking you into the very heart of this incredible artistic area. Get the most of your time ashore to explore the chic resort and follow in the footsteps of great artists such as Michelangelo.

Meet your private driver-guide at 0800 as close as possible to your ship for the pleasant 45-minute drive to Pietrasanta, an old town of Roman origins rich in sculpting traditions and filled with workshops frequented by artists from all over the world. Visit the Bozzetti Sculpture Museum and get an insight into how artists make the marble come to life in a busy working artists studio. Some studios may request a small entry fee.

Enjoy a coffee in the Piazza del Duomo before traveling up into the marble quarries of Carrara to discover vast amphitheaters of cut rock for spectacular views and delve into cavernous tunnels that open out into marble cathedrals. An immense cultural and historical patrimony, these mountains were first exploited by Julius Caesar and have supplied artists from Michelangelo to Henry Moore.

Before your marble tour, stop to enjoy lunch in the quarryman's village of Colonnata, renowned for its lard cured in huge marble vats. There are two tours you can choose from here.

  • Either take a guided tour to visit the inside of a working quarry (10 Euro per person), lasting approximately 40-minutes. You'll be taken into the heart of the Apuan Alps to discover a marvelous quarry carved deep inside the mountains of an almost lunar appearance with vast and cavernous rooms. The first section is conducted from a small tour bus and once inside the Ravaccione Quarry, know as the Marble Cathedral, you will be talked through the process of cutting and pulling marble blocks and you will see the working machinery (this is still an active quarry). A truly unforgettable experience with ancient origins stemming from the 2nd century BC.
  • Or, you may wish to join a thrilling 4x4 guided tour (10 Euro per person) travelling through a network of 30 open-air active quarries arriving at Quarry No 83, Canalgrande Alto, at an altitude of almost 1,000m above sea level. The scenery is almost lunar with views over the coast and the Ligurian sea. On the quarry site your tour guide will give you detailed information about methods and stages of excavation, from cutting to loading huge marble blocks on top of the trucks right in front of your eyes. Along the way, you will see where the exciting James Bond chase scene was filmed in Quantum of Solace.
As you travel back to your ship, stop by a family-run vineyard to enjoy an afternoon wine-tasting in Colli di Luni, an area renowned for its Vermentino white wine (15 Euro per person). Arrival back in La Spezia is at approximately 1700.

This is a private, small-group shore excursion Portovenere and Cinque Terre from the port of La Spezia. A 9-hour tour designed for the discerning traveler seeking an authentic Italian experience with only the very best of English-speaking driver/guides. Discover Italy close-up in a Mercedes minivan for up to 8 people, taking you into the very heart of this beautiful World Heritage site. Get the most of your time ashore and explore the colorful fishing village of Portovenere and adventure through the villages of the Cinque Terre.

Meet your private driver-guide beside your ship at 8am for the short drive to the delightful fishing village of Portovenere, with its tall and colorful waterfront houses. Enjoy memorable sea views from the promontory where the church of San Pietro stands. Constructed of black dolomite limestone with veining of the Portoro marble, quarried in and around Portovenere, its Gothic-Genovese style dates to 1256-1277. The church was built on the remains of an early Christian church and Byzantine abbey with parts of a heathen temple from the Roman age. At the foot of the promontory there is a small grotto named after Lord Byron who took refuge here.

From Portovenere, you'll begin your adventure through the five lands of the Cinque Terre, a landscape so unique that in 1998 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A great way to discover this area is from the sea. You'll have an option of departing from the harbor to enjoy a ferry ride (additional cost) to Vernazza, a great stop for lunch at a restaurant set on the cliffs, looking out across the bay (lunch at own expense). The ferry journey will take you past Riomaggiore and Manarola with great photo opportunities from the sea.

Meet up with your driver and visit either Corniglia set up on the hill or enjoy a stroll around Riomaggiore or Manarola. You could continue on to the larger and busier town of Monterosso but please note it is not possible to stop in all the villages in one day and for this tour it is best to keep the day as flexible as possible and see where your journey takes you. In some places you may wish to consider using the train and if the weather and sea conditions are good, the local ferry is certainly recommended.

Wherever your journey takes you this day, you will return with wonderful memories to your ship in the port of La Spezia at approximately 5pm.
