A unique place in a unique context, the San Fruttuoso Abbey is set in a little bay between Camogli and Portofino and reachable only by boat or by a 2 hours walk. The Benedectine Abbey has been constructed in the 10th Century and its history is really special: from a monastery to a pirates' den, from the fishermen's home to tombs of the Princes of Doria. Donated to the Italian Heritage Trust, FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano, today the Abbey is worth an excursion. You can visit the monastery, the tower, the tombs. Souvenir shop, restaurants and beach are available.

Having gone through various incarnations – a Benedictine monastery, a pirates’ den, a humble home of fisherfolk and then, for centuries, the property of the Princes of Doria – the Abbey of San Fruttuoso is today an utterly unique place, where the work of Men has been pleasingly integrated with that of Nature. Set within the breathtaking bay that opens up between Camogli and Portofino, the Abbey is a pearl dating from the 10th to the 13th centuries, which radiates out from the deep inlet on the coast of the promontory.

The Nolare Tower, built in the 11th centuries, is not only one of the most ancient parts of the original nucleus of the Abbey but also one of the most interesting towers anywhere in the Liguria region. After the donation to the Italian Heritage Trust, FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano, the Abbey has been completely restored and opened to the public.

You can visit the monastery, the church, the Doria tombs and the garden. Within the complex you can find a souvenir shop, which sells local products, books and maps. Restaurants and a small beach are available. Reachable only by boat from Camogli or Portofino or by a 2 hours walk passing over the hills of the Portofino Regional Park.

In case of bad weather conditions, the Abbey might be closed. Please check before travelling.
