Discover the ancient city of Herculaneum with an expert local guide. Learn about Herculaneum culture and history. Feel like an archaeologist exploring the volcanic evidence, enjoying a timeless experience with your friends and family.

See the ruins of Herculaneum, the smaller, but no less impressive, sister of Pompeii, frozen in time by the same devastating volcanic eruption of August 24th 79 AD. Left buried under the rubble of ash until the 1700s, its discovery stunned the world. All of the ancient town lies at the bottom of an archaeological hole, about 75 feet deep.

Getting closer, see the area of the marina where 300 human skeletons were found along with a boat (on display at weekends). Discover the garden of the “House of the Albergo”, where quince trees have been replanted following evidence of carbonized roots of the ancient fruit tree. Your next stop is the Council Hall of the Augustali, where beautiful frescoes depict Hercules.

Visit the mosaics in the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, and the neighboring store where food and wine containers, carbonized by the volcano, still hang on the walls! Go to the ancient spa, still covered with mosaics from the Roman saunas, gyms, hot rooms, and cold tubs. Finally, see the most spectacular villa of Herculaneum at Villa dei Cervi, with its luxurious mosaics, frescoes, and statues.

Meet your guide at the exit of the Circumvesuviana station of Herculaneum. Follow your guide and skip the line. Enjoy your 2-hour private tour of the ruins of Herculaneum visiting some of the highlights of the site, such as the House of the Mosaic Atrium, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite and the House of the Deer.

After meeting your guide just outside the Circumvesuviana station of "Ercolano Scavi", you will be led to the gate to buy your tickets (not included in the price). Visitors with guides do a separate line that usually lasts no longer than 5 minutes.

Explore the excavations and learn about life as it was during the Roman Empire.

In 79 AD, the cataclysmic volcanic eruption that obliterated Pompeii also buried the seaside town of Herculaneum, known today as Ercolano. Hidden until the 18th century, its artful frescoes and mosaics have retained much color and are truly a sight to behold. Your tour includes visits to the House of the Mosaic Atrium, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite and the House of the Deer. Continuing on our walk we will visit the Decumanus, the Palestra, the Basilica and the Thermal Baths.

A professional local guide will guide your exploration. Informative and fun, you’ll learn about the life of the wealthy in Roman antiquity as you stroll through the intriguing ruins.

Among the many interesting sights are carbonized wood furnishings and architectural elements like ceiling beams that have been preserved in a petrified condition and have retained their original appearance. The extreme heat, toxic gases and ash of the pyroclastic surge left much intact for posterity.

Dress appropriately for this excursion, as walks tend to be cobbled and the summer temperature can be extreme. Quality walking shoes and a hat or umbrella should suffice.

At the end of the 2-hour tour you can decide to continue visiting the site by yourself or follow the guide to the exit.

Enjoy a 2.5-hour walking tour of Herculaneum led by a top-rated local guide. This ancient town is the site of excavated ruins that provides a rare glimpse into the daily life of the ancient Roman Empire.

Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried beneath 60 feet of ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. A bit wealthier and smaller than Pompeii, Herculaneum was a hub of activity in ancient times. From the baths to the amphitheater, life was luxurious by the Bay of Naples. Adorned with colorful frescoes and mosaics, the villas of Herculaneum boast opulence and style.

Sights of interest include the House of the Mosaic Atrium, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, and the House of the Deer. Continuing on with the itinerary, you will visit the Decumanus, the Palestra, the Basilica, and the Thermal Baths of the Forum.

When the town of Herculaneum was overwhelmed by volcanic debris, an airtight seal formed around the town that carbonized wood items and preserved them intact. You’ll be amazed when you see chairs and ceiling beams of original wood, as they looked that fateful day.

An expert local guide will conduct your tour in English. You’ll learn and have fun with your group as you take in the sights of ancient Herculaneum and modern Ercolano. Admire the ever-changing light as it plays off Mt. Vesuvius in the background.

Plan on wearing comfortable shoes to walk over original cobblestone streets. Pack a sun hat or umbrella for summer afternoons, when the temperature can reach 100º f.

A three-hour guided tour to discover the UNESCO-listed Ruins of Herculaneum, the ancient Roman town destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The tour will end on a yummy note, with a taste of Neapolitan delicious street food.

This guided tour will lead you to discover the astonishing UNESCO-listed Ruins of Herculaneum, the ancient Roman town destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD.

Though the ruins of Pompeii are more popular, those of Herculaneum are much better preserved because of the barrage that buried it. The eruption of Mt Vesuvius saw it submerged in a 16m-thick sea of mud that essentially fossilised the city. Even delicate items, such as furniture and clothing, were discovered remarkably well preserved.

The ruins of Herculaneum, the town named after the hero Hercules, were unearthed in the early 18th century by workmen digging a well. Amateur excavations were carried out intermittently until 1874. Serious archaeological work began again in 1927 and continues to this day, although much of the ancient city is buried beneath modern Ercolano. The discovery in recent years of some 300 skeletons along the sea shore came as a surprise, as it had been assumed that the town had been evacuated.

Herculaneum was a wealthier town than Pompeii, possessing an extraordinary density of fine houses, and far more lavish use of coloured marble cladding. Bath houses of ancient Rome represented the wealth of the city. Mosaics and carved and painted frescoes decorated the walls. Marble fountains and sinks, exquisite tile floors and beautifully carved statues added to the grandeur of these influential places.

The tour will end on a yummy note, with a taste of Neapolitan delicious street food.

A wonderful private walking tour of Herculaneum led by an Archaeologist and professional Guide.
Herculaneum was a holiday destination for the Roman aristocracy, a small chest full of miracles. In its private residences and public buildings were found marble decorations, wall paintings, mosaic floors as well as objects implemented in the everyday life.
The city, also called 'the sister of Pompeii' was buried by Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The walking tour provides a glimpse into the private lives of Romans. Second stories, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings and mosaics are still preserved.

The 2 hours tour starts from the ticket office of Herculaneum where you will be met by the guide.
Herculaneum is a small town, located at the foot of Mt Vesuvius, just 7 miles north from Pompeii. The town was quite small as the total area within the enclosure was 20 hectares, with a population of about 3000 inhabitants. While Pompeii had been covered in four to five meters of ashes, an avalanche of muds of about 20 meters had buried Herculaneum, for this reason the city is better preserved than Pompeii.

The guide will be able to show the following highlights: the Northern Cardo (road oriented north-south), the House of the Skeleton, Thermopolium (restaurant food), Men's Thermal Bath, Temple of Augustali, Forum (main square), House of the Black Saloon, House of Neptune and Amphitrite, House of Bel Cortile, the Samnite House, the House of the Wooden Partition, the Bakery, the Gym, the Home of the Bucks, the Marina gate, terrace of Marcus Nonius Balbus and the beach where hundreds of skeletons of the victims of the eruption were discovered.
